Hollywood has long been a cauldron of Progressivism. Remember Sen. McCarthy in the 1950’s? Had he not discredited his theories with his own alcoholism, maybe things could have been yanked up back then. Remember the “Black List” of Hollywood stars, directors, writers, etc suspected (or known) to be Communist sympathizers? They weren’t planning a violent coup. Instead, they created program after program that subtly and progressively dismantled or mocked what most Americans know as “traditional American values.” So who or what governs your morality?

If you compare the programs of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s to the programs today, what are the most obvious differences? Look closely, the progression from the respectful, kind, and caring family programs like Bonanza (1959-1973), Combat (1962-1967), Flipper (1963-1967), Waltons (1971-1981), Little House on the Prairie (1974-1983), Lassie (1954-1974), and dozens more to the what seem to be hideously biased Progressive TV “comedies” that represent the lower possibilities of human interaction … and they’re presented as the Best New TV Comedies of 2013, which are a smorgasbord of base behaviors. Really? This is the BEST we can do?

There was a time not so long ago when at least some in Hollywood had a glimpse of the potential for their industry to impact the population for GOOD! Under the guise of entertainment, at least some writers and producers sought to motivate people to “improve” themselves: either improve their circumstances via hard work and education, or “improve” their character by inspiring people to a more virtuous life.

PoliticalCorrectnessAmerican culture, too, rewarded those who worked toward self-improvement. Lifelong loyalty at work was rewarded with retirement. A “clean life” was desirable, and was often rewarded with success. Now, in contrast, a “clean life” is a joke, often the brunt of jokes like the football player, Tim Tebow. Even worse, it seems many cajole such virtuous individuals in the hope they will “fall!” We don’t hear about the alcoholic that succeeds in living “dry” and rebuilding his life, but the press circles especially celebrities with alcohol or drug issues just waiting for them to self-destruct … and we, the people keep buying the trash they give us.

Although still recovering from his injuries overseas, Sgt. Sanchez insisted on leaving his electric wheelchair to walk the flag down Main Street, U.S.A., saying “If it’s for the colors, I’ll walk"

Although still recovering from his injuries overseas, Sgt. Sanchez insisted on leaving his electric wheelchair to walk the flag down Main Street, U.S.A., saying “If it’s for the colors, I’ll walk”

What do you suppose would happen if We, the People demanded, by virtue of our dollars, more wholesome, virtuous movies and TV programs? Is morality really old-fashioned or just too hard for today’s weak-willed citizen? Must every TV sitcom be about SEX? Is there such a thing as a loving relationship that does NOT focus on SEX? If we say we, as a society, are dismayed by the 50% divorce rate, might we not seek solutions rather than further exploitations? If we’re concerned about the violence in our society, might we not question the “gangsta” lifestyle endorsed by many high profile musicians? Is there anything FUN besides SEX?

What do you care about? What motivates your choices? As much as I disagree with the blind hatred of Islamic fighters, on some level, I respect their commitment to a cause, although it is driven more by fear and hate than real devotion, it seems. Most Americans are not devoted to anything bigger than themselves … even many who claim a religion. Is there anything worth living for? worth fighting for? worth dying for?

FUN with WORDS: Homophones

An old joke tells of someone asking the assistant at a paper shop: ‘Do you keep stationery?’ and she replies: ‘No, I wriggle about a bit.’ She clearly thought he meant the word that is spelt ‘stationary’. There are many pairs of words like this, which sound the same but are spelt differently. They are called homophones or sometimes homonyms.

Identify the pairs of homophones from the following clues.

Example: One word means a place for keeping aircraft; the other word means a shaped piece of wood, metal, etc. on which you can hang clothes.
Answer: Hangar/hanger.

1. One word means simple; the other means an aircraft.

2. One word means expected; the other word means condensed vapour (vapor).

3. One word is nautical; the other is central to the body.

4. One word means connections; the other is an animal.

I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy!

Various European countries claim the original of the tune we know as Yankee Doodle, and it was the British who brought the tune to America during the French and Indian Wars. The opening words of the song refer to the fact that when Oliver Cromwell rode horseback into Oxford in 1653 he wore a hat decorated with a single feather fastened by an elaborate knot — an Italian decoration called a “macaroni.” The British troops used the song and the term sarcastically, to ridicule the makeshift appearance of the dress of American Colonial troops. When the Revolution began, the Americans adopted the song as a rallying tune, and it was played by fifers and drummers in every camp and battle. At the British surrender at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781, the American army band played Yankee Doodle to celebrate the American victory.

Looking for a great inspirational & fun movie for family movie night? Check out Jimmy Cagney in “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942) The story of George M Cohan, composer of “Over There, “The Grand Old Flag,” and “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”

YANKEE DOODLE LYRICS

Yankee Doodle went to town,
A-riding on a pony,
He stuck a feather in his hat
And called it macaroni.

CHORUS: Yankee Doodle, keep it up,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind the music and the step,
And with the girls be handy.

Father and I went down to camp,
Along with Captain Goodin’,
And there we see the men and boys
As thick as hasty puddin’.

(CHORUS)

And there was Gen’ral Washington,
Upon a slapping stallion,
A-giving orders to his men-
I guess there was a million.

(CHORUS)

A long war then was fought and won:
The British were defeated,
And Yankee Doodle was the march
To which their troops retreated.

(CHORUS)

I’m Proud to be A Flag-Waving Yankee Doodle Dandy

Now for a real treat!

Silence Followed ~ Inspiration Monday XVII

ballroom, Duke, fun, physique, romance

Around and around he swept her, her exquisite satin gown floating behind her. Many of the young people hung closely to the walls engaged in conversation about the weather or the latest gossip. The fancy older folks sat in rings of laughter and flattery, eyes flitting back and forth across the wide ballroom, looking for targets. The saucy waltz played on and on, and the couples danced in colorful swirls. The Duke and his lady stole the attention of any idle eyes in the room. His grande physique and elegant black evening clothes declared his nobility and command even as her eyes were held by his powerful gaze. Her soft, sweet face was framed by her auburn curls and punctuated with radiant, lush green eyes that shone with mirth as they continued their musical debate. Gradually, he led them toward the side of the room, and they escaped to the terrace where he surrounded her and placed on her the perfect kiss. Silence followed.

The Duke and his lady!

Life is an Adventure, for Sure!

"life lessons", decision, English, fun, life, tales

Life certainly has a way of sneaking up on you when you’re looking the other way. Ever notice? I’ve made some good decisions, but I’m the first to admit, I’ve also made some humdingers! I can only laugh at my thought process in some of these.

For example, there I was having the time of my life in college, cruising the North Shore of Boston in my ’68 GTO, thinking about what major to declare. It was the end of my sophomore year at Gordon College (Wenham, MA), and I had a week to make my decision. It wasn’t as obvious as one might think. I took the list of classes being offered for Spring term and checked all the classes that sounded remotely interesting to me. Hah! That week, I declared my English Literature major! But … to teach? Heck no!

"Old Hag" English Teacher

All I pictured when I thought of English teachers was the old hag with a tightly twisted bun somewhere near the top of her head. Ugh! That was the last thing I wanted to be. I declared myself … a WRITER! Wish I could say I lived happily ever after on that note, but …

After many twists and turns, I did take a turn as an English teacher. It was intimidating at first, but I quickly fell in love with the kids and vowed never to make them read something without some present-day truth to it to apply to their own lives. For 10 years I taught British lit, American lit, grammar, composition, the novel, drama, and strangely, sign language in a small, private school. A terrific gig, for sure!

Then life moved on … and I followed!

Aphorisms are those things we remember! Things “Gramma” used to say. Strong, true, and concise, aphorisms contain bits of wisdom, wit or information in a small package. Synonyms include proverb, adage, and maxim.

Poor Richard’s Almanac (Remember, the one started by Benjamin Franklin) became noted for, among other things, its stellar content of a few! Drive thy business; let it not drive thee.

Generally, aphorisms are useful in conversation, but also as “guiding lights” through life’s winding journey. We all know some of these if we’ve been around at all. Politicians, religious speakers, and teachers use them frequently.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

Listed below is but a wee sampling for your perusal, edification, and enjoyment!

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. Albert Einstein

I am a foolish man that does stupid things, not a stupid man that does foolish things. Jonathan Troy

Applause is the spur of noble minds, the end and aim of weak ones. Charles Caleb Colton

Every dogma must have its day. H. G. Wells

Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, and a dark side, and it holds the universe together. Carl Zwanzig

Would you live with ease, Do what you ought, and not what you please. Poor Richard’s Almanac

For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the sheltered will never know. Unknown

There cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already full. Henry Kissinger

No man e’er was glorious, who was not laborious. Poor Richard’s Almanac

I hope you’ve enjoyed a romp through an aphorism playground. Do you have a personal favorite to share?
