blow the trumpet

From a Distance …

From a distance, I can hear the rumbles,
As the earth-ball quakes under the strain,
As the nature of man betrays its sorrowful ambition:
To be sovereign and powerful, to be God.

From a distance, I can hear the cries,
For ease, for comfort, for wealth;
No wisdom, No discerning the needs of Neighbors;
Only rest, relaxation, and recreation.

From a distance, I can hear Earth groan,
As her Leaders twist and turn the Truth
To secure and increase their own wealth and power,
Yet they call themselves “Public Servants!”

From a distance, I can hear the unrest,
As Nature recalls her wondrous Creator,
Yet bows in submission to the abused and the abuser,
Man: he could be so much more.

From a distance, I can hear a trumpet call;
A warning, a reminder, an alarm;
Search the scrolls, the history of man
And see his path of self-destruction, and turn.

From a distance, I can hear a mighty roar,
The roar of the eternal King,
Waiting, watching, working to restore
All that has been stolen & destroyed.

THERE’S A CATCH

The Cost of Freedom

FUTURE MEMORIES float around us,
Waiting for us to grab hold;
Waiting for choices to be decided,
Waiting for definition.

    But there’s a catch, as there always is,
    Consequences strung through each choice,
    Baggage surrounding each future memory,
    Unseen, unheard, and often untold.

Each day is a canvas left to conquer;
Colors are chosen, but there is no order,
It’s up to me to choose the object,
And bring order to the colored chaos.

    But there’s a catch, as there always is,
    Consequences strung through each choice,
    What is the price for each future memory,
    Unseen, unheard, and often untold.

What is the Framework and where are the boundaries?
What defines my life’s direction?
What are the goals, the prizes, the treasures
That define the goal of my life.

    There’s a catch, as there always is,
    Consequences strung through each choice,
    Out of death comes life; and out of pain, there’s joy,
    And FREEDOM in borne of TRUTH.

Run toward the TRUTH, the love of God among us,
The birds of the air or the lilies that bloom,
They don’t worry, or strive, or fret;
They just Run toward the TRUTH of GOD’s LOVE.

Matthew 6:25-34

Life is an Adventure, for Sure!

Life certainly has a way of sneaking up on you when you’re looking the other way. Ever notice? I’ve made some good decisions, but I’m the first to admit, I’ve also made some humdingers! I can only laugh at my thought process in some of these.

For example, there I was having the time of my life in college, cruising the North Shore of Boston in my ’68 GTO, thinking about what major to declare. It was the end of my sophomore year at Gordon College (Wenham, MA), and I had a week to make my decision. It wasn’t as obvious as one might think. I took the list of classes being offered for Spring term and checked all the classes that sounded remotely interesting to me. Hah! That week, I declared my English Literature major! But … to teach? Heck no!

"Old Hag" English Teacher

All I pictured when I thought of English teachers was the old hag with a tightly twisted bun somewhere near the top of her head. Ugh! That was the last thing I wanted to be. I declared myself … a WRITER! Wish I could say I lived happily ever after on that note, but …

After many twists and turns, I did take a turn as an English teacher. It was intimidating at first, but I quickly fell in love with the kids and vowed never to make them read something without some present-day truth to it to apply to their own lives. For 10 years I taught British lit, American lit, grammar, composition, the novel, drama, and strangely, sign language in a small, private school. A terrific gig, for sure!

Then life moved on … and I followed!
