A Time for Dreaming

What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you get there?

A New Year is typically a time to take stock of what has been accomplished, and what remains to be accomplished. I can tell you that when I graduated from high school, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I still don’t! 😉

As trite as it sounds, life is NOT a destination. It is not a finite place where we can settle in, put down roots, and exist. Life, strangely enough, is ALIVE! “Living organisms undergo metabolism, maintain homeostasis, possess a capacity to grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce and, through natural selection, adapt to their environment in successive generations.” (Wikipedia) By definition, this means, LIFE, participates is each of these, as well. Life never stays the same, for better or worse.

Never in a thousand years, might I have dreamed the life I am now living, and yet … I am content. My work is fulfilling. My material needs are met and many of the wants, as well. I am relatively healthy, and most importantly, I have three delightful adult children who … MAKE MY DAY! It may not be anyone else’s “American Dream,” but it is mine!

The new year extends before us, and it is time to analyze and make plans for the coming year. How does your life today measure up to your dreams? Are you better off than 4 years ago? What will you do this coming year to improve your life?

As 2011 comes to an inauspicious end, here’s hoping, working, and praying that 2012 will be a year of turning the tide … a Rebirth of Liberty in America.

"I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man." ~ George Washington

Don’t look now, but we’re under attack,
I know you don’t care and you’re really much too busy,
But the jig is up already because they’re loaded for bear,
The cryptocracy now has power, while we nod and go our way.

This means war: they come from both sides now,
Slick career politicians who’ll say anything for your vote,
While we go about our daily struggle, oblivious – in denial.
We didn’t know it was a loaded promise, yea right – Hope and Change!

We never agreed to this, at least I know I never did!
I’m tired of the nastiness, can we be grown-ups PLEASE?
Polls and policies, and poisoned propaganda spins,
It seems as though we’re trapped inside our own apathy here.

And still Old Glory waves atop the flagpoles across our land,
A witness to the changes much more dangerous than bullets,
Still hoping to inspire dreams of great American courage,
WE-the-PEOPLE, it’s our turn now to awaken and make history proud.

Thanks again, BEKINDREWRITE, and may 2012 bring many Inspired Mondays & Tuesdays & Wednesdays … Thanks for your time and encouragement!

Laus Deo

Did you know that in Washington, D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument?

With the rising “Holy War” that is the liberal’s attempt to remove the God from daily life, i.e. the Ten Commandments, “In God We Trust”, “Under God,” etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this amazing historical information untila few days ago.

There is an aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. where two words are displayed: Laus Deo.

There are actually words inscribed on all four faces of the point.

NORTH FACE:
Joint Commission at setting of capstone.
Chester Arthur.
W.W. Corcoran, Chairman
M.E.Bell.
Edward Clark.
John Newton.

Act of August 2, 1876

* ~ * ~ *

WEST FACE:
CORNER STONE LAID ON BED OF FOUNDATION
JULY 4, 1848.

FIRST STONE AT HEIGHT OF 152 FEET LAID.
AUGUST 7, 1880.

CAPSTONE SET DECEMBER 6, 1884.

* ~ * ~ *

SOUTH FACE:
CHIEF ENGINEER AND ARCHITECT
THOS. LINCOLN CASEY,
COLONEL, CORPS OF ENGINEERS.

ASSISTANTS:
GEORGE W. DAVIS.
CAPT, 14TH INFANTRY.
BERNARD R. GREEN,
CIVIL ENGINEER.

Master Mechanic:
P.H.MCLAUGHLIN

* ~ * ~ *

EAST FACE:
LAUS DEO

No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they even exist. Nor, for that matter, do they probably couldn’t care. Once you know Laus Deo‘s history, you will want to share this with everyone you know.

These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to our Heavenly Father, overlooking acres which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

The phrase, however, that is both mysterious and mystical contains two Latin words: Laus Deo – four syllables and only 7 letters. the meaning of these two little words? Very simply, “Praise be to God.”

Inscribed at the highest point overlooking the center of the authority in the US, and perhaps, the world.

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo. “Praise be to God!”

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l’Enfant ..a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.

“Praise be to God.” Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message.

On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore; on the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. “Praise be to God.”

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848, deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy, “One Nation, Under God.”

“The Prayer below was written by Washington at Newburgh, New York, at the close of the Revolutionary War on June 14, 1783. It was sent to the thirteen governors of the newly freed states in a “Circular Letter Addressed to the Governors of all the States on the Disbanding of the Army.”

Circular Letter Addressed to the Governors of all the States on the Disbanding of the Army, June 14, 1783

I have thus freely declared what I wished to make known, before I surrendered up my public trust to those who committed it to me. The task is now accomplished. I now bid adieu to your Excellency, as the chief magistrate of your State, at the same time I bid a last farewell to the cares of office and all the employments of public life.

“It remains, then, to be my final and only request that your Excellency will communicate these sentiments to your legislature at their next meeting, and that they may be considered the legacy of one, who has ardently wished, on all occasions, to be useful to his country, and who, even in the shade of retirement, will not fail to implore the divine benediction on it.

“I now make it my earnest prayer that God would have you, and the State over which you preside, in his holy protection; that he would incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow-citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for brethren who have served in the field; and finally that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind, which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation.

LAUS DEO!

When you stop to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation’s capitol, you will easily find the signature of God, as it is unmistakably inscribed everywhere.

You may forget the width and height of “Laus Deo,” its location, or the architects, but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or these words: “Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, “the watchmen stand guard in vain.” (Psalm 127: 1)

This is not rewritten history, but our children will not learn this unless we teach them.

Once-homeless Army Sergeant Launches Effort to Provide for Needy

Sgt. Joshua Evans, currently stationed in Kuwait, founded the charity group, Operation: Santa's Soldiers, which works to raise funds for the homeless. Evans was inspired to start the nonprofit after turning his life around in the Army.

STUTTGART, Germany — Six years ago, Sgt. Joshua Evans was homeless, jobless and unable to support his wife and daughter in Long Beach, Calif. He called his car home.

“We just didn’t have the money to pay the rent or make ends meet,” said Evans, who found himself on the street after the Internet company he worked for went bust.

Today, Evans is looking to help others after getting his own life back on track. With his earlier tough times in mind, Evans launched a nonprofit charitable effort, Operation: Santa’s Soldiers, which aims to provide winter coats and boots for the homeless.

The idea came about during his current deployment to Kuwait, where he serves with the 56th Signal Company. Shortly before the holiday season, Evans came up with the plan of raising funds to help the homeless and he asked fellow soldiers at Camp Arifjan to chip in. The contributions were used to purchase 60 winter coats and 60 waterproof boots. The goods were delivered to Simpson Housing Services, a Minnesota-based homeless support organization, in time for Christmas.

Evans, who will redeploy to the U.S. in January, is hoping the effort will catch on with fellow soldiers and grow in the years ahead.

“I’ve gotten a pretty decent response, so what I’m trying to do is ask people to contact me through Facebook if they want to be a part of it,” said Evans, who launched an Operation: Santa’s Soldiers page on the social networking site. “I want this to go on in a pay-it-forward kind of way.”

For Evans, 33, the decision to take up the help-the-homeless cause is connected to his own hard times.

“I was going down a pretty bad path,” Evans said. “I give credit to my wife and the Army with turning my life around.”

When Evans was living out of a car, a career in the military was something of a last resort. At the time, Evans would do odd jobs to scrape together enough cash for a meal or an occasional motel room. He often relied on homeless shelters for clothes and food, he said… READ MORE

Army Sgt. Turns His Own Homelessness into Something Great

THIS is what America is about about … or should be! Americans helping Americans, not because of tax rebates or brownie points, but because we’re neighbors! It’s not even just about money, as evidenced by Sgt Evans efforts on behalf of fellow Americans! Please check out this new organization and consider a donation to start off the New year!

Indeed!

Samuel at Gilgal

George Washington wrote this in a letter to Thomas Nelson August 20, 1778:

The Hand of providence has been so conspicuous in all this, that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith, and more than wicked, that has not gratitude enough to acknowledge his obligations.

Showing gratitude to those in service to our nation.

Operation Gratitude Blog

Our care packages certainly aren’t meant to annoy the recipients, but somehow we managed to do just that recently:

I am writing this a week before Christmas, from ‘an undisclosed location in southwest Asia’. As I’m writing this, I am a bit annoyed at your organization. Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep up the façade of a tough old Army First Sergeant with tears streaming down your face?

When I arrived on duty this morning, I was greeted by a package on my desk from Operation Gratitude. I am happy to say this package was not the first of this type that my Soldiers and I have received over the past few months. Each time, I am TOTALLY overwhelmed at the support shown to us, complete strangers, by various individuals and groups of individuals, also complete strangers. If ever there is doubt where the true beauty and strength of our country…
