inI will follow the colors of the US of A,
As long as life beats within me,
These colors stand for freedom, like no where else,
Though we know freedom isn’t free!
I will follow the colors of the US of A,
As long as she keeps running;
She’s never stopped pressing toward Freedom for all;
That would be too easy!
I will follow the colors of the US of A,
Embracing thoughtful self-reliance,
The blood of the Patriots still nourishes our land,
Fueled by desperate despotic defiance!
I will follow the colors of the US of A,
And live free or die;
The nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me,
“Thank you, ma’am, for your service!”
***NOTE: Inspiration Monday is a wonderful exercise. Make sure you thank a Veteran as you go your way this week! Thanks, BEKINDREWRITE, for your inspiration!
Sentimental writers and orators sometimes ascribe meanings to the colors in the flag. The practice is erroneous, as are statements on this subject attributed to George Washington and other founders of the country.
From the book “Our Flag” published in 1989 by the House of Representatives…
“On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution authorizing a committee to devise a seal for the United States of America. This mission, designed to reflect the Founding Fathers’ beliefs, values, and sovereignty of the new Nation, did not become a reality until June 20, 1782. In heraldic devices, such as seals, each element has a specific meaning. Even colors have specific meanings. The colors red, white, and blue did not have meanings for The Stars and Stripes when it was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated:
“The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.”
Also this from a book about the flag published in 1977 by the House of Representatives…“The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun.”

We give thanks for all we have. Of course, there will always be things we want, but don’t have yet, and may never attain, but no matter who we are we have … LOTS! Life is not about what we manage to accumulate, but who we are, and who we are is reflected in the people around us. It’s relationships that demonstrate a life well-lived, and then, not even so much in numbers as in quality.
We give thanks because someone is courageous enough to love us! Whether family member or friend, there is nothing that brightens a life more than a quality friend, a “soul-mate,” one who loves us on our worst day and enjoys us on our best days.
We give thanks because we do have all we need! We may lack some of what we want, but Americans have their basic needs met.
One of the greatest attitude shifters revolves around adjusting the individual focus from what we apparently lack to what we truly have.
In order to learn what life has to teach, Henry David Thoreau in WALDEN suggests one must learn to be self-reliant. A tremendous fan of “Simplicity,” to Thoreau simplicity in experience, simplicity in self-reliance, and simplicity in worship bred the finer things in life. In contrast, Thoreau saw complexity breeding only dissatisfaction.
The contrasting thought is that the accumulation of things will bring ultimate satisfaction and happiness, when the reality is the opposite. The accumulation of things only leads to more things.
CONCLUSION: Be thankful for who you are and all you have!
