With Memorial Day on Monday, I’m a little late, but wanted to participate anyway! Hope that’s ok be kind rewrite ~ Inspiration Monday XIII?

The Colors of Character by CharacterCounts.org/overview/about.html

How to make a mask!

With a dire desire to build a mask,
I ponder life’s bold images,
And scan the shapes, the colors, and shades,
And gauge life’s starts and finishes.

What sort of mask do I need today,
Something bright and frilly,
Or perhaps today I wish to say,
Something dark and chilly.

What shall I choose to become today,
A mask of joy or sorrow,
What passion shall I evoke today,
Red or blue, green or yellow?

I hear you scoff at my contemplation,
That I dare to design my mask,
Who does yours, I sweetly inquire,
Or should I bother to ask?

President Obama: A Memorial Day no-show
for Commander in Chief

VIENNA, Va, May 28, 2011 — President Obama stopped for two days in Warsaw, Poland. His visit included a visit to Grób Nieznanego Żołnierza, Poland’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Memorial Day by Karen Barefoot

If my math is correct, this is the second consecutive Memorial Day that the President has decided to honor the war dead of another. A second time he has found himself too busy to be at Arlington National Cemetery.

Instead of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington, he placed a wreath at the Ghetto Heroes Memorial. This is an important memorial in that it honors the sacrifice of tens of thousands of Jews who were killed in the Warsaw Ghettos uprising on 1943. (Read more … )

On Memorial Day — Keep the Memory of Those Who Died In Your Name Alive

By Judge Patrick Dugan

“For most of my life, I was like most people: I knew what Memorial Day stood for, but I didn’t really stop to think about what it truly meant. That changed after I went to Iraq in 2004 as a civil-affairs soldier with the Army Reserves. When you serve with people who don’t come home, Memorial Day means something different.
Memorial Day is not about politics. Whatever your feelings about current or former wars, remember this: All military personnel take an oath. The fallen swore and gave their lives honoring a promise:
“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the uniform code of military justice. So help me God.”

I am an American Soldier

I am an American Soldier.

I am a Warrior and member of a team.

I serve the people of the United States and live the Army Values.

I will always place the mission first.

I will never accept defeat.

I will never quit.

I will never leave a fallen comrade.

I am disciplined,. physically and mentally tough,

trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills.

I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.

I am an expert and I am a professional.

I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy

the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.

I am guardian of freedom and the American way of life.

I am an American Soldier.

Many years ago, I enlisted in the US Army. Though offered a commission, I declined. I wanted to earn respect by my performance, not by the rank I wore. I served a mere three years and was not involved in combat. One of my daughters has chosen to follow in my footsteps, and has already served 5 years, including a tour in the desert. As happy as I am that many Americans have never known such hardship as seen in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Laos, or Iraq and Afghanistan now, it is an UN-happy truth that without struggle, there is little appreciation. Many Americans do not value the freedoms we still have. They exist in a quiet complacency that disregards the deeply personal sacrifices of the past. All too many just don’t care. I thoroughly hope you are not among them.

Memorial Day has traditionally been observed in Washington D.C. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. Although President Obama has not seen fit to continue this observance in Arlington, there is much symbolism involved inn the traditional ceremony.

“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery is also known as the Tomb of the Unknowns and has never been officially named. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier holds the remains of an unidentified American soldier from World War I.
Next to the tomb are the crypts of unknowns from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Those three graves are marked with white marble slabs flush with the plaza. Interesting facts about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Sentinels of the Third United States Infantry Regiment “Old Guard.”

Life certainly has a way of sneaking up on you when you’re looking the other way. Ever notice? I’ve made some good decisions, but I’m the first to admit, I’ve also made some humdingers! I can only laugh at my thought process in some of these.

For example, there I was having the time of my life in college, cruising the North Shore of Boston in my ’68 GTO, thinking about what major to declare. It was the end of my sophomore year at Gordon College (Wenham, MA), and I had a week to make my decision. It wasn’t as obvious as one might think. I took the list of classes being offered for Spring term and checked all the classes that sounded remotely interesting to me. Hah! That week, I declared my English Literature major! But … to teach? Heck no!

"Old Hag" English Teacher

All I pictured when I thought of English teachers was the old hag with a tightly twisted bun somewhere near the top of her head. Ugh! That was the last thing I wanted to be. I declared myself … a WRITER! Wish I could say I lived happily ever after on that note, but …

After many twists and turns, I did take a turn as an English teacher. It was intimidating at first, but I quickly fell in love with the kids and vowed never to make them read something without some present-day truth to it to apply to their own lives. For 10 years I taught British lit, American lit, grammar, composition, the novel, drama, and strangely, sign language in a small, private school. A terrific gig, for sure!

Then life moved on … and I followed!

Confused??? Republican or Democrat? Check it out!

16 Monday May 2011

America, beliefs, Democrat, differences, Republican, vote

Contrary to the opinions of the general public, Republicans are not “bad guys” and the Democrats ride in to the rescue! Let me see if I can break it down for you and clear up the discrepancies.

Democrats believe individuals are ill equipped or prepared to make their own decisions and care for their selves and family. Democrats believe it is the government’s responsibility to make these basic decisions for us and provide for the basic needs of every individual. Democrats believe that those who do not work are entitled to having their basic needs met by those who do work, otherwise known as the redistribution of wealth. Democrats believe in the power of the “elite” – whether government, educators, or union bosses – these individuals have the power and make decisions FOR the masses (presumably for their best interest?) They also believe in opening our borders and allowing people to come and go as they please unrestricted. What democrats do NOT care about is how to pay for all these programs, so they raise taxes.

Republicans believe in the dignity of every individual, and the right for each American to individual freedom. Republicans believe that all people are created with equal rights as outlined in the US Constitution. Republicans believe in the “inalienable rights endowed by our Creator” on each person regardless of sex, religion, or race. Republicans do not favor one group above another – all Americans have equal rights – all Americans taxed according to their income. Republicans believe the primary duty of the federal government of the United States is to secure our borders and protect American citizens. Republicans believe in LEGAL immigration. What Republicans do NOT believe is that those who have earned much, built businesses and hired employees, ought to be taxed MORE for their success to pay for those who choose NOT to work.

DEMOCRATS BELIEVE in :

  • ending terrorism not emboldening terrorists,
  • fighting disease and poverty worldwide,
  • rejecting torture,
  • affordable energy costs,
  • fighting global warming and developing sensible alternative energy sources,
  • quality education for our children,
  • tax and election reform,
  • keeping religion out of government and our schools,
  • caring for our senior citizens,
  • affordable prescription drugs
  • providing quality health care for all,
  • creating good jobs,
  • protecting social security and Medicaid,
  • sexual equality and homosexual rights,
  • not enabling corrupt and oppressive governments,
  • a woman’s right to chose
  • a fair immigration policy,
  • civil rights for all,
  • safeguarding the environment and protecting wildlife
  • not opting to stimulate corporate profits and malfeasance at the expense of the working class of this country.
  • Democrats believe in spreading the wealth and taking the money from rich Americans who have worked hard for it or inherited it and then giving the money to the lower and middle class.”
  • REPUBLICANS BELIEVE in:

  • a strong military to protect our borders and promote the public safety
  • encouraging private enterprise to meet the medical needs of their employees at a reasonable fee
  • helping those in need to help themselves, providing basic humanitarian help whenever, wherever needed
  • a strong national defense because we have real and true enemies who seek our destruction and the destruction of our way of life
  • making available to every citizen all that is necessary (healthy food, water, shelter, heat, air) to maintain life at affordable costs.
  • research to promote life-sustaining, sensible provisions for our future (agriculture, medical, technical, etc)
  • fixing what is broken with our public school system to bring us even with less developed countries of the world. “Scores from the 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment to be released Tuesday show 15-year-old students in the U.S. performing about average in reading and science, and below average in math. Out of 34 countries, the U.S. ranked 14th in reading, 17th in science and 25th in math.” (USA Today 12/7/2010)
  • Real tax reform along the lines of the Fair Tax Act
  • Real term limits for elected officials
  • The right for every American to pursue and observe the religion of heir choice so long as it doesn’t restrict others from doing the same
  • Restructuring Medicare and prescription drug services as genuine entitlements, paid into by the recipients throughout their working life so they can accommodate all who need the programs and will need them in the future.
  • Reducing over-regulation and taxation, particularly on small business, so they can grow and produce more jobs in the private sector.
  • Re-defining Social Security and Medicaid to encourage employment and self-reliance over dependence on the government
  • Equality for all, not just some
  • Redefining our role in the international community to take care of our nation first, secure our borders, ensure domestic tranquility …
  • Protect the right of every baby to be born healthy
  • The rights contained in the US Constitution apply only to those legally living within her borders. Immigrants are welcome to apply for citizenship. The application process should be affordable and reasonable for all wishing to become American citizens.
  • Republicans believe in the American Dream, I.e. that anyone willing to work can make a living and acquire wealth according to their own ingenuity and work ethic.
  • YOU decide!

When I Wish Upon a Star

When I wish upon a star,
It’s not to find out where we are,
It’s not to learn what my day will hold,
It’s not about money, or gems, or gold.

When I wish upon a star,
I sometimes think we’ve gone too far,
Too far from kindness, friendship and caring,
Into a world of privacy and not daring …

When I wish upon a star,
It’s because I do know who we are,
We remember the towers and how they fell
And how loudly chimed America’s Liberty Bell.

When I wish upon a star
    I wonder why we now have Czars;
I wonder how far we’ll let things go
Before we realize this ain’t no game show!

When I wish upon a star,
I hope we haven’t gone too far
From character, integrity, and simple kindness,
Far from our early moral brightness.

When I wish upon a star,
    I wonder if there’s a superstar
Waiting in the wings, moral courage to bring,
    America’s freedom bell again ringing!

    THE ME Inside of ME

I have a secret living deep inside of me,
A hidden place wherein me dwells
    A secret few can see.

Way down deep inside me lives the ME I used to be,
    Untouched by human weaknesses,
    Before, when I was free.

Life itself took aim and fired at certain parts of me,
Wrapped chains of fear around my soul,
    But freedom must be free.

With each breath my self I see much like I used to be,
With ever breath I’m younger still,
I want you all to see!

To Vote or Not to Vote – Eh, Why Bother?

“What’s the difference!  They’re ALL corrupt!”  The well-meaning American said she hadn’t voted in many years because all the candidates appear corrupt.  I asked her how much research she had done.  “Oh none!  I don’t think any of them are worth the time and effort.”

“And another thing – why can’t I vote for anyone I want in the primary?  I should be able to vote either party, if I choose!”This issue I’ll discuss another time SOON! Watch for it!

How many potential voters feel either all the candidates are corrupt or their individual vote couldn’t possibly haven an impact? I suspect many, and I understand this sentiment. Problem is, doing nothing isn’t the answer, is it? Ignoring the problem never makes is go away. So, maybe there’s some sense to be made of the choices we have before us. Maybe there is something an individual can do, as insignificant as it might seem, to make a positive difference.

    1. Is the nation, state, or town going in the direction that is best for all?

If all seems well, I’m afraid you’re either deceived or dreaming, but still, it’s YOUR choice, so back the current regime.

    2. If, however, the nation is NOT moving in the direction that is best for all, what authority do the PEOPLE have to change the current direction?
    3. GET INVOLVED! At the very least, if freedom is a valuable commodity, conscientious citizens can educate themselves on the issues and the unalienable rights afforded them by our Creator and the established republican Constitution.

    Thomas Jefferson said:

We may say with truth and meaning, that governments are more or less republican as they have more or less of the element of popular election and control in their composition; and believing, as I do, that the mass of the citizens is the safest depository of their own rights, and especially, that the evils flowing from the duperies of the people, are less injurious than those from the egoism of their agents, I am a friend to that composition of government which has in it the most of this ingredient.¹

Laziness is no excuse! Didn’t our parents or grandparents teach us that “Anything worth having is worth fighting for?” Life is easy today. Most of us live in well contained homes with heat, running water, and more food choices than a vast majority of humans on this globe, yet we’ve forgotten what preserves those things for us. Most of us will not face an armed hoard of enemies when we head home or starvation. Some do, true enough, but not most. We’ve forgotten the sight of the once horrific Iron Curtain, and other similar symbols of tyranny that affected millions of people for decades. Out of sight; out of mind.

While no human is above corruption, neither is that excuse for not exercising our right of choice. Choice is what separates us from tyranny. Choice represents FREEDOM. While we may not find a candidate that agrees with our sensibilities 100%, 7 out of 10 isn’t bad when we consider the alternatives!

Now is the time. There are so many currently in the decision-making process, search the web, read, listen, ask. Find the man or woman who most closely represents the opinions and issues, and cast a vote. If there isn’t one, write one in! On every ballot, a write-in option exists. Make a choice. Make your voice count, or hold on tightly as America drifts into oblivion like so many before her.

“Only government can cause inflation, preserve monopoly, and punish enterprise.” William F. Buckley, Jr

Nightmare on the Stone Garden Wall

He leapt onto the stone garden wall with laughter lifting from him. The elevated rose garden overlooked their small patch of shoreline. Without a thought, she ran up from behind and just as he turned to meet her, her feet left the ground. With catlike agility, her legs wrapped around his waist, but he had not established his balance. His knees buckled. Her laughter morphed to a scream as they fell headfirst to the unforgiving sidewalk beneath.

A bright red cardinal sang out loudly. An answer slid through the trees soon after. White fluffy clouds skidded across the blue sky warmed by the golden sun of late Spring. Other birds, various and many, sang their unique songs, built their nests, and raised their young.

The two lay unmoving in a growing tainted stain.

How do You Influence the Others in Your Life?

Have you heard a child echo some unsavory word you recently spoke? Or witnessed a child mirror a thoughtless act?

I worked with small people for many years, and I am all too familiar with the attitudes and words they say. These little ones repeat what they hear! Little eyes are always watching and little ears are always listening. When they misbehave, they are mimicking behavior they have seen … someplace!

Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend) influences the life of a child(ren) in ways we never realize and seldom consider. In fact, there is nothing that any one of us says or does that does not influence at least one other person. Nothing! Not those under-your-breath murmurs. Not the silently mouthed curses. Not the slamming of a door or the throwing of a dish. These acts are not for our benefit, but for the benefit of someone else. To make them feel guilty, or embarrassed, or ashamed … something.

Think about this is regards to some of the major news events of the past weeks. If a Royal Wedding was important to you, who now knows that? What was your response to the Wedding? Why?

What about the killing of Osama Bin Laden or an election? How did that affect you? What are the effects of his death as you perceive them? How has your response affected your children or loved ones? Do your children understand what an Election is?

Responsibility is one of those character issues that has, in many respects, gone by the wayside. I was a child in the 50’s and 60’s. When I was younger (than I am now,) children did not dare talk back to their parents. If they did, they knew they’d pay a stiff price. Either sitting down would be very uncomfortable for a few days, or the taste of soap would fill our senses for some time. School discipline came into play for chewing gum or being late for class. A wild night out as a teen meant hanging out in a McD’s parking lot sneaking a cigarette!

A myriad of events of the 60’s changed everything, and not for the better. The failures I see in today’s society are a result of these history-changing events. Studies note some of these changes, but not all of them made the news. The shadows of rebellion of the 60’s fill novels and dramas, yet until prayer or quiet times “suddenly” disappeared from schools, and abortions were”suddenly” legalized, the changes were so gradual that no one really noticed. The View Nam War and the subsequent protests gave young people, in particular, but everyone, really, an excuse to disregard their elders and “the Establishment.” “Free Love” justified the anger about the war and breakdown of the family. Sex became a form of self-expression, and often perverted. And on and on. Bit by bit, the “establishment” was dethroned, dis-empowered, and disassembled. Problem is, nothing replaced it but emptiness. No moral code. No boundaries. No goals. Just, “if it feels good, do it!”

Now, we are left with a generation that is lost. Amidst the international turmoil, individuals search for meaning, for purpose, for direction. Social structure stripped away years ago left today’s generations without boundaries. Without a moral code of some sort, there is no direction, no pathway, and no goals. Too many people care about nothing but themselves. Could this be a reflection of the “ME Generation” come to fruition?

Too many parents have children today only to put them into state or private facilities as early as 3 weeks of age. These children go in the morning, are picked up in the evening, taken home, fed, and put to bed. No family interaction time, little or no parental influence. I understand the conundrum. Two incomes are necessary to maintain life in today’s economy, but at what expense?

Our children, American children, need their parents’ love, support, guidance, and instruction. They need to be nurtured and trained to prepare for life as an adult, and that job is much bigger than schooling. Though our morality may differ from one to another, something is better than nothing! Parents are responsible for the children they produce. Someone needs to teach Fathers and Mothers that being a parent means more than the biological act. The schools can’t do it. For some reason, most churches aren’t doing it well. It’s up to parents, as it should be, to build into our children some kind of moral compass to guide them through life.

In nature, if you want to produce a carrot, do you plant an elm tree? If you want to produce potatoes, do you plant petunias? Of course not! I believe the same holds true with character. If you want to produce honesty, be honest. If you want to produce kindness, be kind. If you want your children to be responsible, teach them by example. Remember the cliché: A picture is worth a 1000 words? True enough!

How do you influence the children in your life? They’re watching!

“The only foundation of a free Constitution, is pure virtue, and if this cannot be inspired into our people, in a greater measure than they have it now, they may change their rulers, and the forms of government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty.” –John Adams, letter to Zabdiel Adams, 1776
