Without a thought, she ran up from behind and just as he turned to meet her, her feet left the ground. With catlike agility, her legs wrapped around his waist, but he had not established his balance. His knees buckled. Her laughter morphed to a scream as they fell headfirst to the unforgiving sidewalk beneath.
A bright red cardinal sang out loudly. An answer slid through the trees soon after. White fluffy clouds skidded across the blue sky warmed by the golden sun of late Spring. Other birds, various and many, sang their unique songs, built their nests, and raised their young.
